  • Guest, UPDATE We went through the site migration runbook and completed all steps. We will need to complete the migration next week, but will leave the forums up for the weekend. A few days after maintenance, a major upgrade revision to the forum site will occur.

US West Bodie Ghost Town to Mt Patterson 11,654’ June 3-5th 2022

Getting excited studying the .gpx you kindly provided. We've been through Del Monte Canyon, but not over to Aurora, so eager to make that happen. Trying to find an optimal route for the trailer - do you have a particular section in mind that would be too tight? We might be able to go around...

US West Bodie Ghost Town to Mt Patterson 11,654’ June 3-5th 2022

Looks like fun! Couple questions - you mind if we drag along our HQ15? We've camped at Leavitt several times, but have yet to attempt with our trailer; I think we can make it, but may need to get the winch out; we might head up a day earlier so we don't hold things up. For the leg to Bodie...

Starlink for Overlanding Build & Mods

OK, goal in sight. Got the cables re-worked, the dish mounted with foam buffer and took it around the neighborhood for some spot tests. Quick summary, Dishy stayed connected most of the time (apologies to Starlink, as I forgot to Stow and Disconnect between stops), but Dishy liked a...

Thanks for sharing that. Way over my head mostly. Also kind of makes my quest for finding the next night's campsite seem trivial, but glad others are making better use of this technology.

Starlink for Overlanding Build & Mods

Yes, my Dishy is currently using CAT5E, which is fine, really, but in the process of setting it up for overlanding I am using CAT7 with cable wrap, and shortening the runs from the shipped 75ft. Others have reported improved data speeds and reduced current draw via shortened cables, so while...

Great service from Starlink! COMMENT FROM Victoria Hello Derek, Thank you for reaching out! We';re sorry to hear your router arrived with some damage. We went ahead and created an order for a replacement router to be sent out to you as soon as possible. We've updated your order to the...

Starlink for Overlanding Build & Mods

Here are some "rough cut assembly" pics of the build for my truck. Pieces are pretty much all HD, aluminum lengths, 5/16ths tee bolts. Dishy wasn't happy about being tied down flat, but still produced decent performance. Remaining steps: 1) Disassemble, sand/grind smooth, prime & paint...

Well, I said I would post mistakes, so here's the first (hopefully save someone else the bother): That right there is a shattered piece of safety glass. Yiikes! I thought everyone was using Gorilla Glass or some such on things like this (or heck, why glass at all?) It still works just...

Starlink for Overlanding Build & Mods

Quick update on build - networking bits to allow me to hack into the cable showing up today. Heading over to local hardware store to get some bailing wire and duct tape. Quick comparison below of "roaming = true" a few days ago vs. "roaming = false" now. Like others, I'll play around a bit...

Starlink for Overlanding Build & Mods

Looks like @Jim SoG may have been prescient.....this just showed up :disappointed:: So, now it's $135/mo for the way I envision using it, at least most of the year.

Good questions. Yes, plants and hardscape obstructions can quickly make reception untenable, although in my experience having a large olive tree and my two-story house somewhat close to the dish have not been factors. Re inclement weather, Starlink says, "Starlink is proven to withstand...

Starlink for Overlanding Build & Mods

I can sympathize with that, having signed up on 7-Apr-2021. A couple of thoughts..... 1) My January 2022 delivery estimate from Starlink was end-2022, so I was pleasantly surprised when they emailed it was available a couple weeks back. Depending on how many are in the queue for your area...

I My $0.02... I am currently in for $654 for the dish plus $110 per month for service. There is no lock and the warranty is only 12 months. So, caveat emptor. Still, this seems fair to me and while Elon has demonstrated a willingness to charge what the traffic will bear I expect other...

Starlink for Overlanding Build & Mods

Here is a pretty cool link. If you navigate with a desktop (sorry, doesn't work on mobile) and set your Home Location (mine is South Bay, CA), then it will show which satellites are "in view" and their path of motion. Really interesting that a given only connects to my dishy for a minute or so...

Still doing design on the build, but also spending a bit of time learning more about the current status of Starlink and capabilities. Here's a link to a great video that interviews two Starlink users who have Roaming enabled. And here's a snapshot of my debug data showing Roaming = true...

Starlink for Overlanding Build & Mods

Hi Jim, yes - lots of pics along the way, even my screw-ups :-) . Yesterday and last night was unpacking and learning the app. Pretty decent UI. Even with the dish up against the olive treee (see earlier pic) I was able to hold a one hour Google Meets call with a buddy in Sparks, NV with...

Thanks for the input. Here are a couple of pics of the trial run. Dish is on top of the container in front of our house, and Speedtest - 214 down, 12 up, 40ms latency, 5ms jitter - better than I expected. Now ordering/buying the mobile installation bits.

Couldn't find another dedicated Starlink thread, so please pull this if I missed, but it seems time to address this topic. Let's start by recognizing that those of us in the US are quite privileged to live in a country where something like Starlink is even allowed and where the freedom to use...
