    Dealing with Snakes?

Not replying directly to you phlfly, but I've seen dogs mentioned a few times in this thread and I felt it important to mention -- Dogs are wonderful travel companions, but I wouldn't trust a dog to know "snakes = bad" without training. In fact, a dog's curiosity is very likely to increase the...

    2018 Chevy Colorado Z71

Glad they are available. That Boron Steel is amazing stuff. Question for the more informed: Have they used the Boron Steel properties to make the skids lighter, or have they used the same thickness skids as a usual skid plate maker would, making for heavy but SUPER strong skids? If Boron steel...

Pachyderm, or "Pac", a 2017 GMC Canyon

Thanks Jakes2514! I appreciate the kind words and will try to keep that level of detail in all my posts. For all readers who have gotten this far, don’t hold your breath for updates right away. We will be collecting parts and materials as our budget allows and rather than post a piecemeal part...

    Smittybilt XL around New England

Hi Ben, Being in Alberta I'm not much help, and I know you said you did tons of research so you probably know most of this stuff already, But, I'm stuck at work waiting on a phone call so I figure I'd jump in and share some of my own observations and opinions on this tent as we've run it for 3...

Pachyderm, or "Pac", a 2017 GMC Canyon

I owe both of you guys a few cold ones around a fire someday -- that AEV snorkel looks great on the Canyon. There's hardly a gap there at all. That is the direction I think I'll go in; I like the look. Thanks for posting that -- I was searching for hours with no luck over the past few days so...

    Alloys or steel rims

Great question and I honestly don’t know. I have very limited tire experience so I’m not familiar with that corrosion. I never saw it on the two sets of wheels I went through on my JK but they didn’t use a ton of salt in Alberta for most of those miles. There’s also an even chance that I didn’t...

    Alloys or steel rims

I'll jump in on that because up until a few weeks ago, I thought the same thing. However, I've since learned (as I'm building a bunch of stuff out of aluminum) that Aluminum corrosion is kind of unique. When folks see aluminum corroding, most of the time they are witnessing Galvanic Corrosion...

Pachyderm, or "Pac", a 2017 GMC Canyon

I am grateful for that info and for the advice on other alternatives. I was either going to fabricate a snorkel from aluminum or carbon fibre but I think knowing there are many overseas with 4” inlets that can be adapted is handy. I’ll do some more research and see. Thanks very much for the info!

Pachyderm, or "Pac", a 2017 GMC Canyon

Okay that took less time than I thought. It looks very, very close but the fender wheel arch on the Canyon may interfere a bit. It's close enough to explore further, but not close enough to take a $700 gamble on ordering the ARB snorkel just yet. Yesterday afternoon after work I called around...

Thanks Boost. Based on the pic you posted, if I overlay the Canyon in the same way I should have some idea of the snorkel will fit and that opens up the options a fair bit. Love the "No, it's an antelope" thing. Probably leaves a few folks scratching their heads!

Pachyderm, or "Pac", a 2017 GMC Canyon

Just did a quick search and couldn't find it so if you could send me the link to that, I'd be very interested! Right now my only other option is to build my own which seems like it'll never quite have the same fit/finish/function as the AEV option.

Pachyderm, or "Pac", a 2017 GMC Canyon

Great idea. I really like that first option, though that second option is very versatile. Also, I was super impressed how that Colorado handled some of those rock climbs in that video! Thanks for sharing that! I didn't think he could do it but he did, relatively easily.

What snorkel are you running on your Colorado? The AEV and ARB offerings apparently don't fit the Canyon so that one may not either, but I figured I'd check.

Thanks! Which lift did you go with, and would you go with that one again? Thanks fellas! You just sold me on rock sliders 100%. Front bumper will be designed to enhance the approach angles as much as possible. We aren't worried about a few l/100 kms fuel efficiency that we will lose. Rear...

Thanks folks! Half the fun is in the process, and I'm enjoying it. Not sure what the next steps will be but it'll be cashflow dependent from here on out!

Pachyderm, or "Pac", a 2017 GMC Canyon

That’s exactly the bumper design I was hoping for. I’d spring for the ARB bumper and call it a day but I can’t get confirmation on whether it fits the Canyon or not, and even if it does, it looks like a $3k part here in Canada. But, using a similar Shape I think the ARB style out of aluminum...

I saw your build thread! Nice rig you have and there is some good inspiration for us too! I really appreciate the kind words about the story, too. I really like the factory look of that winch bumper, and I appreciate your advice on the air dam. The air dam mod is one we will do for sure while...

Part 5: The Rack Continued (In case anyone is wondering why I'm splitting this into parts, ExPo has a word limit and I talk too much, and I'm cutting and pasting this to OB to make it easy to share in two places) A custom rack commissioned by a builder was quickly ruled out due to cost...

Pachyderm, or "Pac", a 2017 GMC Canyon

Part 4: The Rack Now is a good time to mention that we've only owned Pac for 12 days as of today, so this is a "learn as you go" experience. Our first priority was to get a bed rack built for Pac. The bed rack would serve as a main mounting for many other things that would come after -- tent...
