    Overlanding is not Elitist!

As long as we can all agree Kenwood is better than Icom..... I'm kidding :)

I verified my truck is still where I parked it on the 16th. 1100 miles away.

    Trail Toys NSA Switch Panel

There are a handful of vendors building kits to tidy up accessory wiring on our trucks. Two big ones come to mind with sPOD, and Switch-Pros One you may not have heard of is Trail Toys and their NSA (No Strings Attached) Switch Panel Trail Toys is one guy, located near Houston, Texas. (He...

2016 Texas Hill Country Spring Rendezvous

I could be convinced to make this happen. Especially if it doesn't interfere with any other events. :)

2007 Toyota Tacoma -- Mobile Antenna Farm

Thanks! I expect all of my antennas will be moved in the next 12 months. I'll also likely be replacing the Kenwood TM-D700 with a Yaesu FTM-400DR and will then move the TM-D700 to my desk with an APRS TNC as both an iGate, and message station.

    CB or HAM?

MarkW, Many of the mobile VHF/UHF units have detachable controls. This is a bit more than the Cobra 75, but if you look at the photos of my truck, you'll see that most of the radio components are mounted under the seats, with only the control heads, and mics exposed This is under the...

What Did You Do With Your Rig Today?

I finally got off my duff, and wired up my rear LED pods. They're currently mounted to the top of my truck bed tool box, and pointed rearward, but could be adjusted to function as camp lights. Switch is in the cab, next to the shifter. I'll take more photos after it gets dark tonight.

What Did You Do With Your Rig Today?

I broke one of my antennas. I think I'm going to move all the VHF and UHF antennas to the roof as a result. I'll be using STI-Co Flexi-Whips which should be impossible to break.

What Did You Do With Your Rig Today?

I used it to haul a bunch of radio junk to give a presentation on Mobile Radio Communications to a group of Off Roaders, and Overlanders in Central Texas. Slides here

    Recovery Kits

Fair enough. I tend to toss a Pelican/Plano case in the truck with a couple of additional HTs, each with a spare battery or two just in case.

    Byonics MicroTrak RTG

For a "remote help" and "remote tracking" stand point I agree with Mad_Garden_Gnome. The capabilities offered by APRS are improved when you think of it in a small, group aspect. If "base camp" or the "lead vehicle" includes an APRS receiver site, and tracking software, you now have a self...

Snow Chains or Cables and why

I think a good set of proper SNOW tires. (not M+S, but actual Snow Tires.) go a very long way. I didn't grow up driving in mountain passes, but I did grow up in Wisconsin. We see our fair share of snow, ice, and the worst black ice. If I had to choose between chains and cables I guess I'd go...

OB Approved Overland Safety: Fire Extinguishers

For a 2.5lb Automotive fire extinguisher with rapid access I think this might be one of the best options. I'm going to order one, and try mounting it on the BACK of the passenger seat, rather than the front. 2.5lb Fire Extinguisher Vehicle Mount I'm also going to be putting a larger 4 or 5lb...
