  • Guest, we will be conducting site maintenance this week and some downtime is expected. At this time Rally Point and the Member Map will also become an app-only feature for long-term security and stability. A few days after this maintenance, a major upgrade revision to the forum site will occur.

These National Parks Will Require Reservations in 2022

Grand Teton will NOT require a timed entry pass in 2022. However, all of their campgrounds are reservation only. In addition, there will be construction on a portion of Moose-Wilson Road throughout 2022 and this will include closures. During the summer (Memorial to Labor Day), this part of the...

    Backpacking Quilt

I switched to a quilt about 8 years ago. Love being able to move around at night. I have a 10 degree, 900 fill down quilt from Enlightened Equipment. It has a short, zippered foot box, elastic straps to secure it to the sleeping pad and a collar with snaps to keep it closed. I’ve slept down to...

    Bear country

Yes, the western bears are emerging from winter hibernation. Yellowstone reported their first sighting of a grizzly on March 8. They’re hungry and grumpy, much like me each morning before coffee (I rarely bite, just growl a bit). This is not a good time to be hiking or shed hunting alone in...

Overland from Washington, DC metro to GCNP

I agree about the overuse. Some of the national forests are testing a system that allows them to scan the camper’s license plate and paired with the location, determine if they’ve exceeded the maximum allowable number of days. This is primarily useful for dispersed or non-hosted sites. I prefer...

Help me plan my first Eastern Sierra trip?

+1 for the White Mountain/Bristlecone Pine area. There are a few sites as you ascend CA168, then not much until the park campground. Stock up on gas/supplies in Bishop, as there’s nothing even remotely nearby. The Alabama Hills are also a good choice and it’s scenic as heck. Take the short walk...

Found! Ruins and Whispers in Utah

Great video! That’s a beautiful area.

Overland from Washington, DC metro to GCNP

I understand, but sometimes it’s really about location, location, location…some of the dispersed areas near DeMotte are along FR-611, FR-270 and FR-400. I haven’t used them, so can’t provide details. I will say that prime boondock sites have been packed the last two years. Some looked like RV lots!

    Trash carrier option

+1 for this and @OldManJack’s simple and cost effective system. The Trasheroo style carriers are okay until you’re camping in bear country, where failing to properly store any fragrant items may attract unwelcome visitors. If you use one, move it into your vehicle at night or when away from...

    US West Canceled trips?

I was Dave when Dave wasn’t cool…heck, I didn’t even know he existed back then, but I had a great mentor who set me on the right path. No rice and beans, but a whole lot of ramen.

Overland from Washington, DC metro to GCNP

Sound like a great trip! I stayed at Big Tesuque Campground a few years back. Lovely and quiet. A small paved parking lot, a few nice tent sites and a decent vault toilet. Check the website, I think it’s still free. As for Kaibab NF, I’ve only camped at DeMotte Campground. If you can, make a...

    US West Canceled trips?

Not canceling, but my wallet is gonna scream bloody murder… My first jaunt across the U.S. last year lasted nearly nearly 2 months and covered nearly 10,700 miles. Even towing the teardrop trailer, my fuel cost was just over $2300 USD. I’m planning a similar trip this year with a bit less...

    GAS prices

Amen! I re-watched Longmire, as I’m also reading the books. They’re very good; the opposite of “woke” and often very humorous. YouTube, too. Paul on FabRats is working on not only the FJ, but that sweet ‘67 Firebird he found. It’s beautiful (even though the interior smells like mice ). I also...

    GAS prices

Okay, I’ll wade into the fray… 1. Yes, Gasbuddy is a useful app; it can help you decide where to fill up the tank for the least $$ along your route. Research ahead to determine the cheapest locations. Buy gas in Lee Vining, CA? Fuggitaboutit! The station at the end of June Lake Loop is typically...

How do you carry your bikes?

You’re correct, I’m not using that spot for a gennie. The trailer has built in solar power and I recently purchased a Jackery 300 power station with Solar Saga 100W panel to supplement. I just picked up the bike today, so I’ll measure the wheel spread to see if the rails need to be cut. I plan...

How do you carry your bikes?

Both Thule and Yakima make lightweight bike carriers that work with your existing hitch receiver. They’re about 19 lbs each for a 2-bike rig. On a similar note, I’m looking to add an upright bike rail mount across the tongue of my teardrop trailer. Has anyone done this? I’ve chosen this...

    Digital Rear View Mirror

Yes, it’s a typically wide view, as it primarily operates as a backup camera. It also comes with a small, dedicated screen and there’s not an option to pair it to your vehicle’s display or iPad/cell phone. I’ve suggested that to the company. I was thinking that you didn’t have to mount it on...

    Bear country

Excellent information from the OB community (as always!), and special thanks to @Road and @ChasingOurTrunks for the level of detail in their responses. They are 100% spot on in emphasizing the importance of clean camps and proper food storage. A few other items that may attract bears to your...
