Guest, we will be conducting site maintenance August 4th and some downtime is expected. At this time Rally Point and the Member Map will also become an app-only feature for long-term security and stability. A few days after this maintenance, a major upgrade revision to the forum site will occur.
I can relate, at age 22 in 1977 I bought my first get outta town wheeler…A 76 F-250 high boy, needed plenty of tools to keep that truck running through the years all over the Sierras. Kick myself for ever selling it…
I have endless suggestions, way too many to list….depending on Your interests, I suggest start by doing some research on the town of Bridgeport, Ca. and the surrounding area like Twin Lakes, Bodie Ghost Town, Travertine hot springs and the abandoned Chemung gold mine.
Cool, We have two acres in the redwoods up near the Hwy17 summit. Honestly, I’m a Hwy 395 junky at heart, exploring mines, old historic sites up and down from Carson City south, Bridgeport being my adventure base camp. From there I go N,S,E, and West at least 2-4 times a year….The Eastern Sierra...
Great views, great riding, off roading and exploring, we come in on Johnson lane off 395 in Minden/ Gardnerville. Always good times in the Pine nut Forrest…..
On the 4.0 SOHC, the passenger side head timing cassette is located on the back side of the head against the firewall, so need to remove the engine to get to it. Also the 4x4 model has a “balance shaft”on the front pass. side, chain driven from the crank. Very detailed step by step tear down and...
Right back at You! So much going on in the Eastern Sierra to explore, if You only go for the scenery You could spend a lifetime standing in disbelief looking out over vistas that most will never see. I have several “base camps” that I return to frequently and venture out from them in every...
Thank You everyone especially Chris for the medical preparedness talk and demonstration from a true professional. I usually get caught up in Vehicle maintenance, route planning, and what gear to take on specific trips before I go out, Medical needs and first aid on the trail have been moved way...
Thanks for the feedback, 2” torque twist kit installed up front and shackles in the rear ( switching to a 2” add a leaf kit soon). The issue with the four door is the fuel tank as You know it’s almost mid ship w/o a skid plate….so I’m making a plate for it as I write this. The other was the...
Forgot to mention that the front bumper on my 99 is from Affordable Off-Road, they make a nice 3 piece winch bumper with optional bull bar and skid plate set up for the 2nd gen. (The Rangers of the same vintage have different front frame horns) They also make a rear bumper as well.
New member here with a 99 Explorer XLT 4X4 4.0 SOHC & 5R55E trans. Bought new and converted it from grocery getter / Kid taxi to an over lander over the past few Years.Although not a rough terrain rig by any stretch and virtually no aftermarket the body on frame and reliability make it a good...
Keep a close eye on kids and pets around the rivers when You get up in elevation, in normal rainfall years the snowmelt makes them run fast, this Year they will run fast for a lot longer. Seems like every year we lose someone who slips off the bank and is taken down stream.
Had to Laugh, My 99 Explorer has the original starter as well, bought it new in 99 and after all the engine, trans and suspension mods I started thinking I should replace it even though it works fine. However not wanting to Jinx myself and after knocking on wood…….I now carry a new spare...
Thanks, looking forward to it, I’ve been traveling through and exploring the Western and Eastern Sierra most of my life and still haven’t seen nearly all there is to see. We are blessed to have so much rich history right in our backyard.
Made the jump from guest to member this evening, looking forward to getting out and meeting many of You at the next meet up later this month in Sunol,Ca. New trans installed on the Exploder….upgrades to wiring, trans cooling, brakes and suspension, added vital sign gauges as well..
Good platform the 2005 third gen. Explorer, good luck with Your build, freshened up the trans. On the 99’ recently so it’s going back in this weekend……a thankless job when done at home but worth the effort….
