^^^x2. Exactly, the guys with all the gear that think they’re invincible, simply because they have the gear, but don’t really know how to use their gear are the dangerous ones...
Back in the 90’s, I took my 2WD Chevy S10 Blazer further off-road than most of the decked-out mall crawlers you see around DC. It’s about getting out there and exploring, not so much about 4WD.
Good to see newer rigs being used as designed, rather than mall crawlers. I wish there was more gear, like a real roof rack, brush guard, etc. Those things have to be custom fabbed, unlike the previous generations. But then again, Gerry McGovern is going after the Chelsea “tractor” crowd...
So you forgot some more pros:
- Better / flatter discharge rates ( I think your comment about consistent power is related, just a finer point)
- 4x or more charge cycles than SLA/AGM
- faster charge times
- 1/4 the weight of SLA/AGM
- lower TCO
Cons:
- higher initial cost
- more volatile
My neighbor swears by them, but his office is close to their shop. I’ve bought Rover parts from John and he seems very knowledgeable on 4x4s in general, as well as with Rovers. If his shop were closer, I’d provably spend more money there, but Independant British is closer...
That’s all Gerry NcGivern’s doing He was design chief when they were owned by Ford, and is still chief designer. He!s going fir the Chelsea tractor crowd and ignoring the old LR customer base for the upscale crowd...
And sadly, the next LR Defender will only be a name on a reskinned eJoke, er, Evoque. Jeep keeps showing the world on how to build rugged vehicles while meeting ever stringent gov requirements. LR seems to refuse to even try...
Perhaps you may want to try Glamping?High-end hotel level comfort, yet still outdoors?
But seriously, overlanding is about the adventure by vehicle, not so much where you sleep. BTW, have you considered an adventure vehicles like Earthroamers or Tiger Adventure?
Good write-up! Another battery type to consider is LiFePO4 as prices have come down, can cycle far more then lead-acid, much better discharge/charge characteristics, and is only a fraction of the weight & size of lead-acid. All things considered, TCO on LiFePO can be better than lead-acid...
I converted the EAS on my Range Rover Classic to OME coils, but I miss the self leveling aspect of the EAS. I’m definitely going back to EAS.
Not that familiar with the Yota/Lexus EAS, but you may want to reconsider going to coils, especially if you do any towing. Cornering is also a big...
If you’re doing Rushmore, you should visit Wall Drug & Sturgis. In ND, there’s Teddy Roosevelt NP, then in Montana, you’ve got Glacier NP. If you get that far, it’s only a little more to hit Banff in the Canadian Rockies. Definitely worth it. I did a similar trip years ago, would love to do it...
If you can, Isle Royale, https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isle_Royale. From your list, it looks like you’ve got the major spots. Camp out at Sleeping Bear if you can, it s great sleeping under the stars on the shore of Lake Michigan!

LOL, if you were new to the brand, I’d say no, but since you already have one, go for it! Worst case scenario, you have a parts truck[emoji57]
