My experiences pretty much mimic yours.
My latest experiment was to recently purchase the Garmin Overlander which has iOverlander integrated in it so it can be used offline. I’m planning an extended trip to Utah and Nevada in a month or so and hopefully I’ll work out any issues. I’m also going...
...if I can find out about what I'm looking at while I'm looking at it.
When I plan a route, if something shows on a map, I might look it up through google.
If I find something interesting out in the wilds, I'll drop a pin on Gaia with a note and maybe take a photo and look it up when I get home.
I've had the same issues with Gaia as cug, and I think it stems from the iPhone going in and out of cell service, despite having previously downloaded the maps to use offline. For whatever reason it gets hung up for long periods of time, or crashes or acts like the maps aren't downloaded. I've...
...Pumpkin Patch and woke up to a sandstorm. I drove for hours barely moving forward with my eyes straining to see what once was a road. Although Gaia GPS helped to keep me in the general area it was easy at times to wander off into the desert only to realize I was off the road.
Here I am...
cug, why would you be taking Gaia into the backcountry, but still be depending on cellular service?. I thought that the whole point is to be independent of cell service. Maybe I'm missing something?
Does anyone here think that he new "refreshed" Gaia interface (on iOS tablet/phone) is a step...
If buying new, definitely get the GSM model. But if you have WiFi only on a recent generation iPad, the GPS module might be worth it over a new iPad. It was for me. Adding a Bluetooth GPS receiver gave my WiFi only iPad years more life. Saved me 1 generation of upgrades ($1000)as the iPad was...
...been looking at upgrading from my iPhone 6+. Yep! you read that right. A 6+. :tearsofjoy: Though I use my iPhone 15 as a back-up.
I use Gaia almost exclusively. I like to keep my process simple. It has its bugs, but I definitely don't have the issues mentioned above. It works well...
Maybe not the right population but has anyone who used the iPad at one point switched to (or from) any of the garmin tread series?
I know the newer and larger ones run android and can side load apps like Gaia and OnX.
...bit older, but since I'm in the same position (for a year now) and still undecided, I'd at least like to share my experience so far:
iPad with Gaia GPS
I have a paid subscription to Gaia and therefore have access to some very nice map layers. The main problem I have with Gaia is that the...
...you to arrive before the big races in a few days.
Some may have noticed the screenshots above and below are from OnX Offroad and not my normal Gaia GPS navigation software. As many of you know, I am always searching for the optimum solutions for my particular style of overland adventure and...
Apparently GAIA didn't include the overall route or day 3, and when I went to re-export they vanished. joy
So I re-uploaded with Day 3 but no overall route (so each day is a separate route). also updated Day 1 to start at the new meeting point the Petro station West of Spokane on 90
...up north, and find a way back down onto the Mojave Road. I make is a habit to pre-download all the GPX data for the surrounding area into Gaia so in the event that I have to create a bypass, and do not have cellular service, I still have a useful map displaying roads, topographical...
...love Sequoyah State Park, Tenkiller, Greenleaf. Just south and west of you is the Ouachita National Forest and also the Ozark Nation Forest if you're wanting to do some trail riding and back country camping. I'd recommend an app like Gaia GPS or onX for finding trails and great public land...
We’re there usually two weekends a month.when Kaiser pass opens till it closes it’s are place to be when off the clock. Fishing is great , You got the hot springs to soak in the evenings and Florence lake , no jet skies or water hot rods , PEACE !!!
Nice Setup! Hey, I found this other article that might provide you with a good storage solution for propane canisters.

That’s a good lookin’ group! Also, Matt, fine, I’ll take responsibility for my own irresponsible spending! I’m excited to learn from your dual battery setup as well brother.
...group! :tearsofjoy: First aid/wilderness medicine basics could be rad, I'll keep that in mind and gauge interest in the future. I could host a Gaia Tech Talk discussion for offgrid mapping/finding dispersed camping/etc, too. Also, I got my dual battery set up last week - I'll be documenting...
