Next challenge: A creative repair that got you off the trail.

Thinking out loud - "If it breaks on the trail - can I fix it?"

One important item for both examples in your post would be a spill kit to collect the oil off the ground. Some offroad clubs require all members to carry one. http://www.delalbright.com/Rubicon/spills.htm

    overlander or car camper?......

Sssshhh... you are going to mess up my business plan of adding "overlander approved" stickers to various products and re-selling them.

    overlander or car camper?......

True, in fact I hear they fine you if you try to use a toilet. Something about saving water.

Wentworth Springs + Rubicon Slabs + Damage + Gear reviews

Gear reviews: 2010 Tacoma Double Cab TRD 4x4 Overall I'm very impressed with this truck. The longer wheelbase and wider stance makes it much less tippy feeling in off camber situations than my 4Runner. But, the worse breakover and departure angles make it much more likely to drag the tail or...

Wentworth Springs + Rubicon Slabs + Damage + Gear reviews

The rocks kept coming as we worked our way towards the granite slabs. In this picture you can see the Loon Lake Dam, which didn't look all that far away... I ended up getting high centered and the recovery strap made an appearance. Eventually we made it onto the slabs. Our original plan...

Wentworth Springs + Rubicon Slabs + Damage + Gear reviews

At this point the trail became rocky and things got interesting. This was my first time rockcrawling in the Tacoma and it took some time to get used to the longer wheelbase compared to my 4Runner. I had aired my tires down to 18psi. This pressure works well on the 4Runner, but it was too...

Wentworth Springs + Rubicon Slabs + Damage + Gear reviews

A few weeks ago some friends and I planned to explore Strawberry Pass which runs between highways 50 and 88 south of Lake Tahoe, but the trail was closed due to a fire. So instead we decided to head a little ways into the Rubicon and play around on the slabs. We had three goals in mind: 1...

what PSI do you run on trails?

I'm still dialing it in. With my C rated KO2s I don't think I'll go below 20 in the future.

Overlanding with a CPAP; Power options?

The key is to run the CPAP off of DC and not through an inverter. Many manufacturers sell a DC-DC converter that plugs into a cigarette lighter plug. It is also helpful to turn off any extra features such as a humidifier, heated tube, etc if possible. Something like a FLEXOPOWER LITHIUM444...

what PSI do you run on trails?

It depends on your vehicle weight, tire size, and tire construction. On my 4Runner with 265/75R16s (~32s) I run 17-18psi on the trail and could go lower if I needed to. On my Tacoma with 265/70R17s (~32s) the same 17-18psi is way too low and leads to the bead leaking air when pinched on rocks...

33 inch tire minimum- Real, Guideline, or Urban Legend?

I take those kind of "rules" as just a set of recommendations, and generally assume that they were thinking of 33" tires on a Jeep Wrangler. There are too many variations in terms of wheelbase, gearing, clearance, driver, etc to come up with hard and fast rules. If it's a sign for a trail that...

Recommendation for routes easy trails near Pinecrest, CA.

Eagle Peak is in that area. I'd recommend checking with the ranger station to check if the gate is open. https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/eagle-peak-loop-off-roading

Spooling the winch line back in under tension. Or... probably cooler to post one from the trail. Next challenge: A picture showing something that should be attached to your truck, but either fell off or broke off on the trail.

    On Board Air Chuck Location?

My 4Runner has front and rear air chucks so that I don't need a long hose to fill the tires. Both chucks are mounted under the bumper where they are easy to access, protected from rocks, and don't get too much spray from the tires. I put rubber caps over them to keep out dirt and grime. I'd...

    Fake Overlanding?

What if we set up a points system where the scoring is determined by a group of super overlanders who are elected by other certified overlanders and who serve a 3 year term? They would add up all the points you earn, and if you exceed a certain score then you get to call yourself an...

    Semi-scientific air compressor comparison

That's a really good question. For full disclosure, I did not pay anywhere near full price for mine. I would think $200 is reasonable for a high quality compressor, and since the ARB is two compressors plus associated wiring I don't think $500 is an entirely unreasonable price. Build quality...

What's your latest camping gear purchase, and what caused you to buy it?

Here's my most recent camping gear purchase! Last set disintegrated after too many miles on bumpy trails.
