    CA Yearly Campfire Permit

Yeah, I thought I'd make sure it was in the glovebox of the rig, and realized they all expire on 12/31, no matter when we issue it. So, I got a new one.

    New Member from West LA

Welcome, Samba! I'm to the south (Diego) and north (The Valley) of you, but you're centrally-located to some great places to explore!

    Uploading GPX / Trails issue

I may be contributing to confusion with the locations I've chosen: there were already trailhead entries for both Black Mtn and Nate Harrison Grade. I attempted to "improve upon them" by recording new, full GPX tracks and, in the case of Black Mtn, two of them: one more complete than the other...

    Uploading GPX / Trails issue

Okay, I am on a Pixel 6 Pro, using Android 12 November update (there's an issue with Dec. , so I held it off) My OB1 software is 11.2.2.0111, following a delete/reinstall on Tues, Jan 11th My Locations *has* the "Black Mtn Truck Trail" file. showing a last update of 09 Jan 2022. This file isn't...

    Uploading GPX / Trails issue

Alright, so I recorded another gpx route yesterday, saved it with a photo and named it related to Nate Harrison Grade near Mt. Palomar observatory. Just as before, I received a message that my file was saved and would be uploaded when I reacquired signal, which I did about five minutes later...

Have my Eyes on a First Run at Mojave Road... 2022 (updated with photos after trek)

Tom, I have to believe that, if we keep posting about such treks, not only will more actually happen but we'll be able to read about/join up with them.

Black Mtn Truck Trail, Ramona California

Not "overlanding" in the sense of camping, but a great, simple drive up to a fantastic spot for views and maybe a nice lunch! So, there are at least two tracks for it in the Overland Bound App map, and it's accessible by taking 7th Ave West off Main in Ramona, rolling along into Pamo Valley (it...

    Uploading GPX / Trails issue

Okay, I'm trying to do my part testing out the app, and by posting useful information. Today, I went out and drove up Black Mtn Truck trail, basically in Ramona, California. There was already a trail marker, pinned at a roundabout about 2/3 way up, where a closed gate likely stopped the...

San Diego vicinity resources to keep us on the trail...

Notwithstanding the similarity in names, I have no affiliation with Basil's Garage, which I just added to the resource map. Basil Lynch is the owner, his 4x4/Overlander upgrade/mod shop is in Vista and they're great.

    Fishing the Sierra Nevada

That would make a Heck of a great overlanding Rally Point!

    Overlanding with Dogs?

My dude is 80lb, and is one of the reasons I stick to a ground tent (there are plenty of other reasons). He zonks out on a mexican blanket on the floor of my Big Agnes car camping tent, and both of us are able to easily ingress/egress :)

US West Valley of the Moon

The listings here are a little dead, but there are a LOT of active groups out there. For example, next weekend is the San Diego 4x4 Superstition Mtn event, with camping/overlanding and a variety of led trail runs. $50/vehicle and info on their site.

    Lift

What tire size do you "need" for the terrain you intend? If you need tires 2, 3, 4,5" taller than stock for the terrain, then that defines the lift you need -- and often implicates a variety of other modifications including regearing your axles. If you can get by without a large lift, you can...

Dog | big fan of the bumpy road?

Our labrador loves everything about four-wheeling...other than rough roads or slow, angular rocky stuff.

    Big Bear/Grapevine Cyn(4N16)

Trail Maintenance in Big Bear is a good idea: there's a LOT of trail traffic and impact, yet it's easy to get to and to stay at for volunteers.

What Did You Do With Your Rig Today?

I unwrapped my snazzy, new rock sliders from Rocky Road Outfitters. Stepped sliders, fitted exactly for my '93 Trooper. I reckon we'll bolt 'em on Saturday!

Have my Eyes on a First Run at Mojave Road... 2022 (updated with photos after trek)

Okay, here's my update: based on the rains, mudding of Soda Lake and some cold weather --combined with some update/repairs to my 210k mi Trooper that I haven't gotten quite done, I have pushed back my traverse of the Mojave Road to March, at which time I plan to join the Crossoverlanding group...

    Fishing the Sierra Nevada

I really only have experience fishing the high country lakes we backpack to, but as I shift into using the truck more, I think we're going to have to hit the "jeep access" lakes and streams in the Eastern Sierra more. Darnitall, though: I'm gonna need bigger stuff to land those beasts like in...

    OB Canoe Talk

I went with an inflatable kayak, for a few reasons: packability, storage (of the folded kayak), and price. Our want is essentially for very occasional use, such as to goof around in the Colorado before then rolling across the Mojave Road, and I already have a garage full of bikes & gear, with...
