I wouldn't go with jerrycans inside the car. I know the 4.0 is thirsty- my Fuelly can attest to that.
What about one of those Pioneer Plastics fuel tanks - may be better sealing than the jerries.

If I were in your shoes, I’d look for something local and RHD.
I would assume that hauling a truck halfway around the world and back would be pretty expensive.
Another thought is that you may find certain components that are normally serviceable, becoming problematic due to LHD/RHD...

My first recommendation for you, if your plan on moving to Botswana is close to reality and expected to be a longer term deal - don't spend money on mods yet.

In that case I would kit the truck and use a decent ground tent, thereby allowing for a base camp setup if you want to.
Downside of rooftop is that every time you want to go anywhere you are packing up camp to do so.

What you could do is to drill straight through the rack, fix an eye bolt in that position, and spin the line around - turn-buckle at the bottom, on the outside of the hood bracket.
Might be just enough clearance, and more secure at the top.
Minimal extra cost.
