    Hatchet or machete?

2nd the nod for the Silky Big Boy folding saw. It's amazing, and super compact. I also have a medium sized Fiskars axe, and a medium sized machete. They all have their own roles, and all get used. I personally wouldn't want a single Swiss-Army hatchetesaw thingie. If my one item breaks or gets...

    Abandon Rail Tracks

We use old railbeds to get around on from time to time. I'd say it's important to get real local input, as railbed right of ways can change, fences go up, bridges get removed, vehicle access can be limited on some rail to trail type railbeds, etc. Here in BC, I belong to a couple FB groups that...

Overlanding is: "Vehicle Dependent Travel". Nothing else. We will not further define "overlanding".

Why do people say “out west?”

I remember planning a trip to Colorado to visit friends, go to Ouray, etc. I really had no ideas where it was, but figured "well, they say it's in the West ..... and I live on the West coast of BC, so how far can it be?" 2500km later we ended up in Colorado.

Why do people say “out west?”

Hows about living North of the Pacific Northwest. :) And pretty much anything the other side of the Rockies is "East" for what it's worth anyways, eh?

    Adventuring With Your Dog/s

When we had a rooftop tent our dogs refused to sleep in the Xterra. I bought a simple long carpet runner from the hardware store, laid it on the hood, and up the windshield and onto the roof. One dog jumps up onto the hood (I would lift the older other one) and they had no problems just waling...

Satelite Phone - Which One is Best?

Based on what you say you are looking for, another vote for an Inreach. It is has served me well over the past few years, definatly provides a sense of security. We bring it when hiking, offroad, camping, or traveling anywhere on the highway really. I've been on a solo 2+week journeys and my...

    Overland Hound

I bought a carpet runner and laid it up the hood and glass, worked like a charm. It had a rubberized backing and didn't slip at all, even on the windshield.

    Heading to the Northwest

Leavenworth and Winthrop in Washington are really nice places ot stop and wander aroubnd. The North Cascades Hwy from Winthrop over to the PMW is an epic drive. I'm a real fan of the central Oregon Coast (Newport area, Hwy 101, and the amazing beaches). My Wife and i try to visit and camp there...

Camping in and around dry riverbeds

Similar thing happened to a couple with a Four Wheel Camper a few years ago. Found a beauty spot in a dry riverbed to camp, and woke up in the middle of the night to the feeling of their truck and camper moving (go figure). I also recall a story of a Jeep guy camping on the edge of a low...
