Something different (Budget Overland Trailer Tent Build)

Yes, I was disappointed and we nearly shelved the entire trip. But grateful we didn't as the weather was relatively kind until Monday. And the push to get the trailer ready means only minor work needed to finish and the gear prep is already 90% done. Gotta see the positives....

Something different (Budget Overland Trailer Tent Build)

Sadly a combination of factors mean't camping became hotelling last weekend. - The tyres didn't arrive until late Thursday - The boy had a stomach bug - Rain. Way too much rain In the end I did fit the new tyres, replaced the wheel bearings and rewired the lighting with LED units (see below)...

    Guess Whats Up

Just a little update on this thread. I am very grateful to Kent R for the parcel I received last week. I've been so busy at work and on the trailer project I have hardly seen the house and when I finally sat down to breathe I was pleasantly surprised to receive this swathe of OB goodies. I...

Something different (Budget Overland Trailer Tent Build)

A little update to the trailer project. The Father-in-Law collected the kitchen unit via a detour to Brdlington on his way up to Whitby. I won the auction at £30 which at the time I figured was a steal even if the condition of the unit was poor. However, aside from being dirty from long term...

    Guess Whats Up

Yes, drivetrain upgrades are always cool as long as they don't require buying half the truck again in the process.

Well looking at that angle I have to assume you bent the old one somehow?

    How would you start over?

A classic LWB W460/461 G-Wagen or newer W461 Pur with Entdecker roof and barn doors. I'd update the interior a little to make it more comfortable with Recaro seats and a Bluetooth head unit, USB sockets. Then I would build a trailer to carry all the gear, probably an ex-Bundeswehr 1 ton unit...

Stoves.... what are you cooking on?

    That's very space efficient.

Something different (Budget Overland Trailer Tent Build)

I consider one of those and the generator / cable laying trailers byut it would have been a lot of work to getb one to accommodating the family. Looks great though and if I ever build something bigger that's the way I will tend.

Stoves.... what are you cooking on?

Great. I'll have to find a UK supplier.

Something different (Budget Overland Trailer Tent Build)

Thanks for the feedback guys. Honestly, it really helps. Mainly in convincing me I am not bonkers for 'bucking the trend'/'fighting the tide' with this. Sometimes it's finances, others necessity in the correct part/vehicle/equipment not existing. But it seems many times I find myself building...

Stoves.... what are you cooking on?

Sage advice indeed. I'm tempted with the Coleman for trailer/outdoor use and a small gas canister inside the van for just warming fluids up. I can't see us doing any extreme environments or long distance Euro travels in the short term while the boy is still young so it's more down to space and...

Something different (Budget Overland Trailer Tent Build)

Well used, basic and cheaper made roof tents seem to start at £850 and I am running around £550 at the moment. So plenty of room to play before reaching that.

Something different (Budget Overland Trailer Tent Build)

Yes, that's appears to be direct interpretation of the CombiCamp design. The true advantage with this is that the rack is hinged of the top/floor panel and acts as a counterweight when opening the heavy tent section out. Then it becomes a base spreading the load across the ply floor panel. All...
