The wind deflector was plastic. Nice and rigid, yet flexible. However, the heat was causing it to warp slightly. Still functional, but looked weird. Found a composite aluminum material that will work much better. Very light weight ( lighter than the plastic one even) and will maintain it's...
More progress on the XK Marjeep. Just finished installing solar panel and wind deflector. Solar charge controller is in the back under the storage drawers.
I helped a company design contractor racks for full size trucks several years ago. Found that more than just profile shapes on cross bars affected wind noise. Things like how high the cross bar was off the vehicle roof line, how far back or forward the cross bar was and overall vehicle profile...
Yes, it makes a howling noise. But I think most cargo racks make for some noise. You can minimize the noise to some degree with profile design options. I added an air deflector. And surprisingly it all but eliminated wind noise.
Update on the build: Needed to turn the water tank 90 degrees. It now sits centered L -R and 6" forward of the rear axle. Right where it should be. Of course everything else had to be rearranged. During that progress I added a second table for the stove. She now rides on a OME 2 1/2" HD full...
The center narrow drawer has been used for utensils. Long handled items like grill spatchula, grill fork, skewers, etc.
I have the three drawers out for now while work is being done.
Sorry for the delay. I've posted an update on the build. Not sure how relative actual measurements would be, unless you also had a Jeep Commander. But all of the drawer system is made of finish grade plywood. 3/8" or 3/4" depending on structural need. Any vertical structural plywood is...
See that you made a trip to Moab. How did that go ? Which trails did you do ? I've been out there a couple times. And loved it ! Last trail I did was Poison spider mesa. Hard trail, but the view at the end is amazing.
Thought I had already posted updates about the cargo space. Maybe not ... Just finished installing 21 gal. fresh water tank. If you are building on a XK, I don't recommend installing a 21 gal. water tank. Unless you don't mind doing a lot of cutting and mod work to the Jeep. It CAN be done. But...
