    Radio mounting

That looks like a Breedlove mount on the front Quarter.

    Portable/Luggable Go-Kits

LMR 240 Flex would be ideal. I find regular LMR 240 way to rigid for field use.

    HAM whuffo?

I used to have a bumper sticker and a front plate that said, "In God We Trust, All Else We Monitor". If a cop ever asks you if your radios will receive police frequencies, which is forbidden in some states. Just say I don't know what are they? Then ask him or her. Does your police radio receive...

    Portable/Luggable Go-Kits

A decent length of rg-58 or 8x, some paracord, and a roll up ladderline jpole. Use a full bottle of water to sling the cord over a tall object, then hoist the jpole up. Maximum range, minimum size and weight. Fits neatly in a zippered pouch.

    mobile device apps that assist

I use several of the offline GPS apps, just download the maps as to where you are going. I use an old Galaxy S3 that's not connected to the network. This keeps my personal phones battery as full as possible. I also use the Repeaterbook app for ham radio. This can be used solely with GPS as well...

    Anyone in NC?

Hi, I routed a trip for my son (Wrangler tj) hwy 321 N to Richland rd north of Lenoir. This may not be a good route for stock vehicles, as it can be rough and challenging. From there or for starters went from the Wilson creek area, Mortimer, Edgemont and wound around towards Linville falls Old...

    Summits On The Air

National Parks On The Air (Npota) is running till end of year. This goes along with the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service. ARRL has a website for this. It is possible to operate both Sota and Npota or maybe Iota (Islands on the air) from the same site at the same time. I hope to set...

    RADIO?

Cb radio is still very cheap and reliable. Flea market finds, etc. Good for multi vehicle caravan trips, info on the highway. Good distance if hilltopping is an option for emergencies. GMRS/FRS are good for campsite and trail use. Also, Ham works great as well.

    Firestik antenna

Depends if Firestik makes a GMRS antenna.

    Ham Radio License Experience

If time permits, the ARRL study guides are very good. I've never been a big fan of the online exam sites except when you think you are ready and want a test run. Alot of people use these sites to memorize the answers not really learning the content. Purchase a radio or use a scanner and monitor...
