I have used a cinch bag/stuff sack before and kept it in the tent, but it is just one more item besides the duffel bags to get in the way. I think I will like the shoe holder, but I am going to have to modify it to stay closed at the top.

Yep, just a play on their name. I rode a mule once, but I was a wee lad and do not really remember it. Mules are nice, and I have heard they are very smart.
