The worst part of adventure

Wildfires and smoke and having to plan trips, then replan, and replan again when wildfires keep breaking out. Also, campfire nuts in the occasional CG we go to that have to have fires in windy conditions or who can’t build a proper fire, etc and smother us with smoke! The obsession with unneeded fires is crazy, and it’s not key to exploring or adventure IMO.

Enjoy the planning phase tbh
But I hate smoke in the eyes and lungs
And people that ruin things for the rest of us lol

No offense to the people from Nevada but I really hate the drive across NV to get to ID, UT, and CO.

From Sparks to Wendover just makes me want to fall asleep at the wheel.

There is very little in NV, esspecially taking 80 across. Every year I go down 93 from twin falls to vegas area which is not as bad.

I disagree, there is so much to see in Nevada. Mining and geology, Pony Express, Pioneer trails and history, Petroglyphs, hot springs, Area 51, Black Rock Desert, Cave Lake, atomic test sites, red haired giants of Lovelock cave, Ichthyosaur fossils, etc. Most beautiful scenic views and mostly free camping. Just get off the pavement and explore!

Today I not only learned I-80 goes through Nevada but apparently it doesn’t change much from PA to NV

Hmmm- that’s the whole point of going where we go- it’s empty- the emptier the better. If we must use interstates it would be 70 across Kansas, 80 most everywhere west of the Mississippi are two of our favorite interstate drives, when we use interstates. In the east, the drive from Albany to Erie Pa I-86 & I-88 are about as empty as it gets east of the Mississippi. Nice drives thru central and the Southern Tier of NY.

Our tour could well be never ending.
there is freedom there...
I spent a good bit of my life working way too hard to accumulate way too much stuff that now is a pain. one example is owning several commercial properties that I rent and have to deal with upkeep and keeping tenants happy. its a constant grind that seems never ending itself and there is always taxes and insurance that I have to pay. it feels like I'm on a treadmill always trying to keep what I have.
I've done some long trips that were long enough that towards the end, I was sort of forgetting about all the stuff I have and all the responsibilities. that was actually a really nice feeling and I definitely understand what is meant when people say that things own us instead of us owning things.

I think the truly worst thing about "adventure" is not being able to experience it fully because of the shackles of material things and allowing ourselves to get into the debt system that we are indoctrinated to get into...always owing and always having to work

good to see people breaking free from that and allowing others to see the joy and freedom that can be had when we quit focusing on things. and using credit in order to live beyond our means...

This resonates with me. Stuff is a pain to maintain!!!

My life has become like living in those tiny houses… It’s like “Aim small, hit small” in shooting. When I retired, we decided to move. Going thru our “stuff” I said we are not taking things that we have carried around for 25 years. Yet still it took 2 U-Haul’s to move.

The cycle of collecting stuff, debt and the random pack rat mentality has really taken hold of many I know. I have successfully been able to break from that mentality. Besides my tools, which will never fit in this category, if I don’t use something for a year and then find it again, away it goes. Sometimes it bites me and I have to buy it again for that 1 time use but we are living small now and it feels nice. Yes I miss my garage and pole barns….but it’s just stuff.

I grew up on a dairy farm in the “southern tier” when it hwy 17 later changed to 86. 30 miles outside Jamestown. I hardly think of that area anymore and the rolling hills. So hearing of Erie, Pa brings back memories of my college days of when I ran sound for a great country band called “Southern Tier Express.” Now that was an adventure!! Cross crossing the back roads from Olean NY & Warren Pa to Erie and all points in between… haven’t thought about that in decades…
