I recently retired and will soon be in the process of putting together an expedition type truck using a surplus Army 2 ½ ton flat bed truck (M1078 or M1081) with a Port Lite Expedition Two mounted on it. I need some advice regarding how to insure this kind of rig. I’ve been using USAA for the past 40 years for auto, homeowner, and renters insurance. But they don’t insure RV’s and recommended Progressive. When I spoke to a representative from Progressive, I was told they don’t insure a truck that size. I may have to look into having it insured as a commercial vehicle. This is going to be a rig for me to live out of for at least a few years so it needs to be insured. Any suggestions?

Look into agreed value insurance with your normal carrier. Never use Progressive. They are crooks.

Thomas,

I know Foremost will insure an RV, but not sure about a 2 1/2 ton military vehicle. Your build sounds like its going to be really cool, please post pictures of it as you go. Best of luck finding insurance.

Progressive told me they wouldn't insure my overland trailer because I didn't sleep inside it. I went to my insurance agent instead, they got me a policy that covers my trailer.... through progressive. Progressive people seem to be idiots and don't understand there are different types of vehicles.
