I've run the 2m/440 version (probably same antenna) for 3-4 years now. They are tough and I'm happy with mine. It looks more like a pretzel after each trip but for $20 I'm not heartbroken.

The Midland Combo I am considering provides 6 dB gain vs the 2.5 from the Tram. It's $20 more but seems like the additional range may be worth it.
Antenna and Mount. I welcome opinions on that though. I have no experience with using better antennas with GMRS. I couldn't get the Midland antenna in time for the Mojave Road this weekend but could get the Tram...

Nothing wrong with more gain, I just have enough large antennas as it is and with where I will be mounting the GMRS antenna I want to limit the antennas coming in contact with each other.
A longer antenna mounted lower (hood/fender, tailgate, etc) may not work as well or work any better than a shorter antenna mount on the roof, antenna height is key but as a ham I know you knew that already.

Our newly installed Midland MXT275 is connected to a Midland MXTA26 antenna via a MXTA25 cable. I used the old CB antenna mount hole on the spare tire carrier. We have not trail tested this set up but have done a walk away test where Charlene walked while I sat in the JK. In a fairly urban cluttered environment our communications between the MXT275 and a Motorola T600 were clear and loud (5X5) at about 3/10th of a mile. Charlene got impatient at that point and came home! We were on GMRS channel 20 with code 12 on the Midland and 50 on the Motorola. I did have to learn that the discrete codes are numbered differently between the Midland and Motorola.

Quite well. It’s solid for simplex at line of sight. No problem in a convoy. You’re not going to hit distant 2m repeaters, but I have other antennas for that.
