100 years ago today the Nation Park Service was signed into law by Congress through the National Park Service Organic Act and charged with the role of preserving ecological and historical integrity of some of our most precious natural resources while maintaining accessibility to people like me and you.

In 100 years the park service has grown to a total of 58 parks, set in over 400 areas, encompassing over 84 million acres of land, 4.5 million acres of oceans, lakes, and reservoirs, 85,049 miles of rivers and streams, 68,561 archaeological sites, 27,000 historic structures, 12,250 miles of trails, and 8,500 miles of roads. It truly is the most incredible playground in the world.

In celebration of their 100th birthday, the National Park Service is offering free admission to its 58 parks August 25th through 28th. Come on America, our greatest resource is waiting for you. Get out and explore!

So awesome. I'm not typically sappy about America stuff, but I am very proud that we established national parks and led the world in the idea and practice of conservation. It's such a neat thing to be able to access and keep for generations that come after us. I don't care who you are or how you lean politically, you just can't argue that NPS is not an amazing thing that needs to continue.

We made a day trip to Mammoth Cave today for the 100th. It felt really good to get out of the heat for a couple hours while still being "outside". They also had a big poster up you could put happy birthday messages on.
