Hey all,

Does anyone know if battery-powered LED Pods exist? When I say battery powered, I'm talking AA, AAA, 9V, that have their own on/off switch on the pod itself. I've looked everywhere and can't seem to find anything .

I am looking for battery powered to avoid having to wire up lights to a cabin switch for something that I'll only use during camping trips. Being able to pull out an LED pod, when needed, flip it on, and illuminate our campsite would be perfect. The idea is to attach them to my RTT rack when needed, and remove when done.

You can start with a company called action led https://www.action-led-lights.com/ These are middle to high end mountain bike lights but meet your need. These are likely overkill, but they are all solid, well made, and do not have battery issues that you might find with the low cost Amazon alterantives. At least starting here gives you a good idea of capabilities and should give you direction on what to look for. Remenber there are floods and throws.

Thanks Gary! I’ll check those out also, as long as they aren’t too pricey...

My thought with the amazon lights is that if I lose one or both off the roof rack,I’m not really out much money ($20 max)...

Check out https://www.lumecube.com/ These are rugged photography cubes that are about 2" cubed with a 1/4 20 mount on the bottom and put out a lot of light. The ones I got to use were early models that were actually too bright for the photography that I like to do. I hear the newer ones have variable brightness controlled by a phone app.

I got this recently. Magnetic base... It is pretty nice, and I like rechargeable things even though its lots of cords.. batteries are worse.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations. I think after looking at everything, rechargeable is the way to go, and it seems like there are multiple companies that create high powered pods that would easily attach to my rack by magnet. Helps me avoid all of the wires and switches!

Are you concerned about the magnetic lights falling off?
@James Deaton

I'd be more concerned with them scratching up the finish on the truck or rack than falling off. Lots of precedence for magnetic mounted lights on cars. Every tow truck I know of carries a set of magnetic stop and turn lights to put on the car they are towing behind the truck. Lots of magnetic gopro and larger camera mounts available as well.

So I ended up going with the following setup (ordered): Luminoodle - 10 ft - I'll wrap this around the RTT rack and below the tent itself so I can light up the bed of the truck for easy night operations. I can also remove it easily and take it with us when we go fishing, hiking, etc.

Also bought a solar powered battery pack (solar or plug in charge). I'll power the luminoodle with tihs and take it wherever we need light and power.

I'll post pics up to this thread with the final installed config and all lit up

For some reason I can't access the link, but I'll let you know how the lights turn out! I'm hoping it serves as a good mobile solution

I have three of these and they are awesome. Not a whole lot of light for pitching a tent (when mounted on vehicle), but great for tasks like cooking, hanging out, getting changed etc.
I've never had one run out on me either.

Does the 40$ include two or one? I love the idea of these but for as simple as they are 40 seems high

I have one of these, too, and like it. Thinking, actually, of getting another. Three different levels of light, indicator lights of how much power left, easy to get to flashing and SOS settings, magnet or hook, overall pretty versatile and compact with quite a bright light.
