So I am getting ready to build a bed rack for my 07 Tundra, I have a Tepui tent that is 12" high and no experience with a tent like this.
My question is if you could pick any height for the rack what would it be?

The assumptions I have to work with:
The mpg of the Tundra is going to stink no matter what, so I'm not interested in saving .5 mpg to give up a bunch of room in the bed unless there's another reason to. I may lower it to save 2 or 3 mpg.
I'm also not going to do any serious rock climbing or other off camber stuff with this rig so not really concerned about center of gravity.
Also not going with a roof rack at this time, but could consider it in the future.

Just wondering if there is an optimum placement - this could be expressed in inches above bed rail, or where the tent height is relative to the cab roof (half way, even w/ top, even w/ bottom, whatever)

THANKS very much for your input!!

Neat looking wheels BTW...

My opinion would be to put the rack as low as possible to keep the tent out of the airstream while at the same time not restricting access and use of the bed. I wouldn't sacrifice access from the sides for a possible 1mpg....

That was my first thought too, but when you do the math with the top of the tent even with roof and add the tube diameter there is only a few inches left to squeeze an arm through. But on the plus side of that equation, the truck is plenty high to be trying to go over the side to get stuff anyway, so I might just be saving scratching it...
