Wiring up a battery monitor (BM-1 or 2)

I'm looking at wiring up a battery monitor (a BM-1 or 2, see attached manual).
Am I right in thinking that to protect the monitor from winching loads, I should connect the winch direct to the battery negative terminal and therefore avoid it's use being seen by the monitor?
Think I know the answer (yes - connect the winch direct to the battery), but am I missing something in terms of battery condition monitoring because the load hasn't passed through the monitor, if that makes sense.
Page 2 and 3 of the attached manual shows that nothing should be connected to the negative terminal of the aux battery except the monitor, but that's how I'd connect the winch negative to avoid winching loads damaging the monitor.
