A coil of copper wire is under the cooktop. When an alternating electric current is passed through it results in an oscillating magnetic field. So the base of the pot/kettle is what heats up. We had no idea about this and we had heard about induction cooking for years! There is no wasted heat, only the cookware heats up.
This is an absolute game-changer as far as we are concerned. Anyone who has tried to use a gas/petrol cooker outside when it's windy will know how difficult it is to cook on low heat. The wind just blows the flame out. You have to constantly be tending it and relighting it. Not only that, but so much of the heat is blown away so it takes much longer to cook and wastes a lot of energy.
This unit is 1800 watts maximum. We will be powering it with a Cotek SP3000 Pure Sine inverter from Antares. This specific model is the 230V and comes with a UK plug, but you can specify a different plug or voltage depending on how you are using it.
