Presenting a bit of a more kid heavy version of overlanding with our build. We travel with three kids and a dog- and in all seasons. So for us a Vanagon Westfalia was a good base. We added a hightop and additional seat to turn it into a 5 seater/5 sleeper.
When we picked up the van about 2 years ago:
Exploring Red River Gorge Kentucky with the stock Pop-top:
Hightop install was a lot of work but pretty straightforward. It has Prodex insulation and gives us a ton of sleeping and storage room.
The "completed" conversion:
Pulled out much of the interior to add the Jumpseat, aux power, propane heat...et al...
Redid the interior lighting, dimmers above and below:
A couple happy campers eat Skottle made pancakes under our ARB awning:
A recent trip to the Gorge with our LR3 and some other off-roading friends:
