Utah National Parks Campground Question

  • Guest, UPDATE We went through the site migration runbook and completed all steps. We will need to complete the migration next week, but will leave the forums up for the weekend. A few days after maintenance, a major upgrade revision to the forum site will occur.

This question would be for anyone who has used the campgrounds within the Nat'l Parks in Utah. We are taking a 15 day trip and have no exact itinerary. We like the flexibility of being able to stay somewhere for more or less time. Most of the campgrounds are 1st come 1st serve anyways. If we get to a campground early and get a spot, are we able to leave without someone taking the spot? We have a RTT so we need the vehicle for exploring and would prefer not to leave our boxes of stuff behind to mark the spot. We are assuming you get a permit or something and there is a post to place it on???

Thanks!

@The Overland Couple

For any reserved sites you'll be good if you are there the 1st night. you can choose to leave at any time. If you pull out all of your gear from a 1st come/1st served campground someone else will likely take the site. Some campgrounds use the post and payment method but the payment slips tend to "blow away". I'd recommend that you leave a couple of camp chairs set up or stake out a tarp like a tent. Basically you have to "occupy the campsite"

If the campground has a Camp host talk to them and see what they recommend.

Basically what he said. Leave some gear behind. This way people know the site is occupied. Most are using the post method. At least the ones in Canyonlands and Arches are.
