My wife and I are looking to take a trip north from Oklahoma through the upper Peninsula and around Lake Superior in June of 2020. I’ve been told the mosquitos and black flies can be relentless. My question is: are the mosquitoes and black flies bad enough to stay away that time of year. I’ve read that some stay away from the U.P. until August. I can deal with it but I think my wife would be miserable if it’s as bad as they say. I want to make sure before I cancel an otherwise great trip. We’ll be camping the entire way.

Thanks in advance for the replies

The bugs can be pretty bad but its nothing that bug spray and/or head nets can't handle! I've also found that if you can stay in the breeze (i.e. near water) it will help keep the bugs away. I've also recently purchased a thermacell that i'm itching (pun intended) to try.

We used to own a camp in the UP. We typically avoided heading up north in May and June. My experience has been that the bugs taper off going into summer and is barely an issue once September gets here.
