IMG_3469.JPG IMG_3474.JPG IMG_3481.JPG IMG_3469.JPG We went out to South Mountain State Park in NC today to do some hiking. The trails were just ok, large path thru the woods that were way too crowded.

After leaving there we went to the north west side of the park where it meets up with the game land. Off 64 take Ropers Hollow road until it ends (mile or so). It then turns into 37203 and you'll see the entrance to the game land. The road snakes through the Mtn along the ridge, at places with only a few feet wider than the vehicle with a sheer drop on either side. You'll drive through some fire damaged areas with fantastic views through the valley and of the surrounding mountains. Unfortunately it does not go all the way thru at this time. There is a gate and a sign about 9 miles in that says it will be open later in the fall once some of the fire damage is repaired.

There are also some offshoots on this road that are open periodically. Some are private so be careful, they are clearly marked. There are also some "pull offs" if your looking to get stuck in the mudd.

The road itself is narrow, rutted, muddy and an all around good time. It's not "lockers and bring a friend" but I wouldn't try it in a stock Compas. There are some 10-14" trenches that you have to attack head on due to the narrowness of the road. See photos below and have a good time. I'll definitely be back in the fall when the entire road is open.
