Safety device

  • Guest, we will be conducting site maintenance this week and some downtime is expected. At this time Rally Point and the Member Map will also become an app-only feature for long-term security and stability. A few days after this maintenance, a major upgrade revision to the forum site will occur.

I’ve been exploring for many years in a Subaru and MDX. Now I own a 4x4 van and have more time in my life. This is creating the opportunity to go longer farther and into more remote areas. I’ve always used paper maps. Now I’m looking for a satellite safety device with maps I can find and use when there isn’t cell service. Also track my location and ability to send an all ok or for help if needed. Is there one people are having good luck with? Currently looking at a Garmin.

We use the Garmin Explorer Inreach and have had no issues with it. We got the full size one over the mini for a couple of reasons, first was reports of better reception due to a larger antenna from some friends that have used both. The second is that the Explorer has a good built in base map and is fully functional without a phone connected. If we are hiking or involved in some type of survival situation I do not want to rely on a tethered cell phone which will have less battery life and not as sturdy as the inreach. in addition the inreach will use more battery when tethered. We use the middle tier of service which gives 40 messages and unlimited check ins. we set our cookie drops to 30 minutes and leave the device on for the entire trip so those we have given access to the website can track and see where were to within 30 minutes if we do not check in on regular intervals. In the vehicle the unit live on a mount next to the drivers door so it does not get tossed during an accident and we can grab it on the way out the door or if trapped upside down.
