Road trip tips

Hello, we are planning a summer road trip from Kansas City to Idaho (and back) this coming July and I was looking for some tips on places to take in along the way. I'd love to get to some places a little off the beaten path but we will be trying to cover about 4-5 hours of highway driving each day so I'd like to find some good places not too far off the highway but maybe getting down some dirt track. If anyone has some suggestions on places in the general vicinity of these way points I'd appreciate it. We'll be driving a mostly stock 2004 Land Cruiser with a off road trailer. This'll be our first real trip of this magnitude, so with this rig and the whole family in tow, we are not looking for the rubicon, just trying to get away from the crowds.

In Northern NV just outside Ely is Ward Charcoal Ovens State Park. A few years back we camped with a group of friends for a long weekend and had a great time.
