Try to avoid coming I-95 until you hit north of Boston. Bring your bikes for Acadia if able. Tons of Carriage roads in the park that are off limits to motor vehicles. Check out Holy Donut in Scarborough right off I-95 just south of Portland. They make the best Donuts. Be ready for crowds though. Everyone is is trying to get that last bit of summer fun. Best of luck.

I was surprised there were ocean front(narrows front) campsites available at 2 campgrounds on the island yesterday for next week. We may just go further north if it is too crowded.

We will actually Camping in Duck Harbor on Isle de Haut (sp?) next week. Only spending an overnight due to work schedule. Don't be surprised if you find the odd open campsite in the Acadia Area especially if you are willing/able to move around.

If you get bored of Acadia or want to keep driving East Check out Lubec and Cobscook Bay State Park. One of our personal favorite. It is about a 2ish hour drive from Acadia (depending on traffic)

PM me if you have questions will try and help (stuck at work all weekend)

.

Depending on day heading north you'll hit traffic on 95 from Portsmouth all the way up. Worst is Fridays going north, Sundays going south. Still, often not as bad as traffic around the Beltway in DC, or around any major city.

Once past Portland some go 295 to Brunswick then Rt 1 up the coast to Mt Desert Island and Acadia (again, lots more traffic this time of year, depending on day and time) some go 95 all the way up to Bangor then down 1A to Acadia.

The carriage roads on Mt Desert are awesome anytime of year. A lot of history on this island. Go to the NP Visitor Center early, ask about what are the least touristy places around the park, stroll through Bar Harbor and check out the shops and ships, try Precipice Path and Perpendicular Trail and the Beehives for some of the most spectacular and daring trails you'll probably ever do on foot (iron rung ladders going up cliff faces), if not too crowded drive up Cadillac Mtn for the first sunrise in America (most of the year, sometimes it is further downeast) and just generally poke around and find your own places your own way.

Adventure!

I first came up here in the early 70's, moved here in the late 70's, and have spent most of my adult life here, when I'm not out wandering the rest of the country.

Hope you have a blast exploring the coast of Maine.

Let me know if you're coming through Portland and when, and if it works out schedule-wise and I'm not out lake camping/fishing elsewhere, I'll be happy to meet up for coffee or a beer. Much easier for me to get into instagram for messages than it is here when I'm out and using only mobile, so if interested, leave word there, not here in OB, or use the email link on my insta: Roaddude

Thank you for the advice. I have driven to the northeast a couple times, but never north of Portland. How do you get to Isle au Haut? A car ferry? The plan is to take the scenic route through NH on 9. Then up along the coast to Acadia and then we will get a pic in front of Steven Kings house(The wife is a big fan) and take the northern route back through NH, Vermont and New York.

I thought wigs was going to answer this, as he's the one mentioned it. I've been off camping and just back Fri.

You may have found out already, and seem to probably alreay be in Maine, but you go over on what they call the mail boat, out of Stonington. Here's a bit more about that.

Hope you're enjoying Vacationland and havent had too much trouble with summah traffic.
