May be a bit too broad of a question. Are you looking for ocean, wetlands, lakes, or Alpine lakes? Lots of choices to be sure.

I live in Sacramento so anywhere within 3 hours. Lake camping or river or stream. Mountains somewhere near sierras. Ect

Personally from Sacramento, I would look at the Gold Lakes area off hwy 49. Beautiful and just of the path enough to not usually be over crowded.

Fordyce lake. You can also drive up to the Signal peak while you're there
