Advocate I
May 2021- Headed with a few friends to Bishop area on May 20-23. We plan to base camp and hit trails during the day.
Interested to know if the high elevation trails such as Wheeler Ridge, Coyote Flats, White Mountains/Papoose Flats are still iced up or are passible? Are the water crossings high from the snowmelt this year? Any intel from locals or someone down there now will help us in our trip planning.
We will likely take CA hwy 4, head down 395, visit Bodie, hit the Bishop Visitors Center, and then find a camp on the 20th. That leaves the 21st and 22nd for day trips. Wheeler Ridge, Coyote Flats, Mazourka Canyon-Mazourka Peak-Papoose Flats-The Narrows, and Silver Canyon-White Mountains-Wyman Creek are all on the table as possible day runs.
Budget Boosted WJ with disconnects & limited slip is the limiting vehicle. It should be Wheeler Ridge capable if it is clear of ice and any water crossings are tame. The rest are are lifted and locked TJ, TJU, and the like. But nobody wants to be off camber on a shelf road, on ice.
Thanks!
