On hot days & nights there will be times I opt for just a simple lean to set-up instead of setting up a tent. However that differs especially if I'm near a creek and the mosquito's are on the attack. Winter time is also a challenge on one hand if its cold and clear a lean to can be better to build a warm fire next to with a back wall deflecting the heat towards the opening. Then the there is the tent in which seems to be the best for to protect me from light snow fall. I guess it depends on your mood, your situation and how much you want to pack.

One solution for warmer weather that I have used is a hammock. Packs light, even models with built in netting.

I must say that I do prefer a tent though as I pretty much always have my camping buddy (Labrador Retriever) with me now a days.
