I will be in june lake, ca in july. I would like to do some overlanding/dispersed camping. I have time to travel as far north as reno, moving west to monteray and down hwy 1. Any recommendations?

Try north and east of Bridgeport. Bald peak Wheeler peak, Mt Patterson, Walker lake, Walker river, Boodie to Masonic mine or Aurora there are plenty of great places to play around there. Google maps is your friend.
