Events and get togethers?

So I am still kinda new to things and my 'rig' is NO WHERE near being ready for trails, but I do want to start getting out to events and meeting people who have some experience I can leech out of their brains. What are some good events and things in the Southeast I should plan to go experience? I am in Georgia but I am not afraid of traveling highways.
