For our Iceland Arctic Trucks Expedition ICE2015 expedition, we custom made a purpose built tracking system for our Exploration Vehicles.

We used a credit card size computer called Raspberry Pi, combined with a GPS module attached to it.

It's a simple, yet very accurate tracking device, which when plotted to a mapping system, really does allow you to see where you have been, and what route you have taken.

What is more, the map displays “live” or “real time” tracking data of the location where the vehicle is at that moment, which can be invaluable when in the highlands, away from any reference point or civilization.

We will be using this tracking device on our forthcoming Iceland Arctic Trucks Expedition ICE2017, and will be publishing maps on a regular basis via our website daily blog (www.ice2017.no).

Visit our ICE2017 website to find out more details and information.

Very cool! Are you able to get your location out real time? I am considering a RasPi + GPS in my Jeep as well but have not put a huge amount of thought into that yet. Will look at your links.

Took a look at a few of your pages for the 2017 trip and loved them! How are you getting to the internet - your writeup sounds like you will have 100% connectivity?

If you are unfamiliar you might take a look at APRS for position reporting - if you have internet you might be able to utilize that system to report your whereabouts real time (and not require radio license/equipment).

Hei Greg
Thanks for your positive comment reply.
Glad you liked our DIY Tracker project - we can talk more when we return from Iceland.
Thanks for following our trip on www.ice2017.no
We rely upon the local internet service for now, which is hit and miss, but we get by, and always seem to get the daily blog out somehow...
But we need to improve upon this in the future.
100% connectivity would be very nice...
Thanks for following.
Talk later when we return from Iceland.
Cheers
Neil :)
