Can we camp up the California coast without having to do campgrounds?

Hello! We are planning a little overland trip up the California coast into Oregon. I know primitive camping is limited, but wondered if anyone could provide suggestions where we can get out of the fray of the campgrounds. Starting just north of LA. Thanks in advance!!
