In response to last year and in preparation for this season, Mono County recently held a town hall zoom meeting to discuss plans to better manage dispersed camping in the region.

The education portion of the response can be seen here:

My take on the town hall is that the surrounding communities main concerns are fire safety, namely preventing wildfires that could endanger the surrounding communities, and proper treatment of human waste.

I have found the link useful for folks in other forums who have expressed interest in dispersed camping but don’t know the first thing about what it entails. Please share it! There is also a GIS to identify areas open/closed to dispersed camping in the Eastern Sierra (ES) region.

If you find yourself in the ES this season, please take extra care. Much of the 395 corridor was hit hard by throngs of people heading to the hills during the pandemic, many of whom did not have the proper skills, knowledge, or tools available to be good land stewards.
