    What to get

Wouldn't hurt at all, more capability is better.

    What to get

Ham radio is far more capable than anything else, however based on this statement below you want GMRS/FRS. For the below to work with ham radio you both would need to test and get licensed, with GMRS a single license covers your family. Mobile GMRS radios can have up to 50 watts and they work...

    first timer questions

Yes you need a front and rear receiver hitch, and the associated winch cradle that goes into the receiver hitch. You will also need to route power to the front and rear of the vehicle to be able to plug the winch in at either location.

New to GMRS. Possible to Buy Radios without CTSS Tones Enabled?

Do you have examples of these radios that are "restricted" ? As mentioned most radios have CTCSS tones that can be enabled if desired but do not come that way. Some may have "extra" channels that already have CTCSS tones set, but the first 22 channels do not.

    Off-road HAM etiquette on 2M

I have both a Browning BR-180b dual band and a Larsen NMO150b. The Browning is a dual band but with the enclosed coil it does move around a bit. The Larsen NM150b 2m antenna is a 5/8 wave so it is longer but can bend.

    Handhelds or vehicle mounted

GMRS is gaining popularity and is fine for vehicle to vehicle comms. I prefer a vehicle mounted radio and a handheld for a spotter or when I step out of the vehicle. This applies to GMRS or ham radio. Ham radio is not for everyone, especially those that just want a plug and play solution. Ham...

Flat, through window antennae cable? GMRS

It would work ok and appears to meet all the requirements but I would expect some signal loss especially at the frequencies GMRS uses. There's bound to be a grommet in the firewall you could run coax through and do a fender mount antenna, a couple of screw holes on the backside of the fender...

    Low Profile Cell Booster Antenna

With those frequencies, height it mite! You can't boost a signal that you can't receive. Personally I would only go with a lopro cell booster antenna if I was say just outside of a metro area where I knew I could get weak signal but for way out I would want something taller to hopefully receive...

Mobile HF Setup for New HAM

As a tech and having voice on 10m a long wire is not necessary, however if you are planning ahead to get your general a linked dipole works well or End Fed Half Wave (EFHW) works decent A popular set up for portable opts is a WolfRiver Coil and vertical collapsible antenna (MFJ-1979). However...
