    Friday Night HAM Radio NET

To clarify what does ECR mean? I am going thru and cleaning up some programming on my ID-5100 so could throw in the DStar reflector depending what this is for.

Does anyone here uses digital HAM radio?

I have DStar and DMR in the truck. I prefer DStar of the two when doing digital. If doing a trail ride though, I stick to strictly FM because you never know when someone outside your group will need to contact you for any reason. Further, not everyone has all digital modes so FM is the only one...

Looking for a HAM radio with controls/display in hand held mic

Well if you are willing to work outside the box, you can find used Motorola gear with O2 control heads that meet your needs. Look at Used-Radios.com

    After the Campout

Thanks. That makes sense but figured I’d ask.

    After the Campout

So we all talk about trip planning and trip activities. I have a question about life after the trip: cleaning up and storing gear. Most I know but I have a couple new self inflating sleeping pads I use in cold weather. These give me an extra R4 insulator between my normal sleeping pad and the...

    Gear to recieve Alerts?

Yeah I have the 5100. While the 7100 could have a feature I haven’t seen, the weather services uses PL codes that are different than what repeaters use. Why ham radio manufacturers don’t include these tones as well is beyond me but they have their reasons I guess.

    Gear to recieve Alerts?

National Weather Service radio channels are used to notify people of all hazards. I do not know if woodland fires use the codes to set off tone alerts based on location. Any weather radio can do this. Ham radios can listen to NWS but I am not aware of any that can use the tone alert by location...

    HAM/GMRS

So there are no type accepted ham radios. So long as they meet Part 15 and Part 90 they can be sold as a ham radio. Don’t forget hams build their own stuff so no external entity checks that amp or transmitter you build. Though if you have a dirty transmitter everyone will let you know fast. For...

    Using OB 1 for NAV

    Using OB 1 for NAV

So I tried changing the setting in the app. I have no setting I am seeing on the iPhone under its settings. I am still having the screen time out when using it to explore rather than get directions. Thoughts?

    Using OB 1 for NAV

Thanks. I thought it was a setting I missed and sure enough it was. I am thinking different maps like Gaia. I have different maps displayed depending what I am doing. I know this app has satellite and hybrid, but was not sure if I could integrate completely different map sources in like Gaia.

    Using OB 1 for NAV

So I dabbled with using OB 1 as my iPhone map app while doing some backroad driving around our county today. Usually I use Haia GPS anytime I drive. A couple items: I used this not to track but to explore. So I drove, saw a road, looked at the map and saw where it may go. The challenge was to...

    The Zello Option

That only works where you have internet connection. HF radio would be more reliable over longer distances.

    FTM 300 Question

Thanks. That is unfortunate it’s not set up that way. I guess there are work arounds. Thanks!

Echolink has an app for iOS (not sure about Android as I do not use it) which works well on my iPhone.

    FTM 300 Question

I am considering an FTM 300 radio for the rig. I'd like to have it set up so I beacon away with APRS but have a PL Tone of 100.0 turned on. On a Kenwood this is done to allow you to beacon without hearing it but allow someone nearby to call you on 144.39 so you can make contact and move to...

    Backcountry Discovery Routes

I've begun researching some trips for 2022 as the wife and I are going stir crazy not traveling. As part of the research I have begun looking at the Northeast and Mid Atlantic backcountry Discovery Routes. These seem to be designed to target the motorcycle community, but also show a lot of roads...

    Ham radio

First tip, always use what folks you ride with use. This is especially important if you aren’t really technically proficient or really well versed in the capabilities of various radios. Second welcome and hope you do get your ham license. Useful tool and fun hobby. Finally, make sure you buy...
