I use a bed tent, fits my whole little family in the bed with no issues, doesnt cost a million bucks, and it's great shelter, with an air mattress its extremely comfortable!

Yes, you absolutely do need permits. State and Suffolk County parks both require Fishing Permits for their respective 4x4 access beaches. These are NOT Camping beaches, they are for fishing only with a camping clause for overnight fishing. You can camp, but you have to fish.
