Does anyone have experience or expertise in resin and or canvas to know if building a truck camper with canvas over wood siding and roof would hold up to the elements? I was thinking maybe treating the canvas with resin or some other weather proofing?
My plans to take a welding class are on hold for at least a few years so I won’t be building a trailer from scratch anytime soon. As an alternative plan, I was thinking about buying a small aluminum utility trailer and adding wood rails and a canvas cover, (similar to featherlite 1683)...

You can find sturdy kitchen style step ladders at Home Depot that are relatively short with a platform on top. The one in the picture is 19” high at the platform.
There is a very nice looking Jeep style trailer on EBay right now and it is in California.
It is also unique. Maybe the only Danish military trailer in the US.

Actually, it is in San Diego. Probably less than 2...
That’s what I was thinking might be a problem. How about use a regular hitch pin, pull the receiver out to take any slack so the pin is holding the load, then drill a smaller hole through the mount and hitch to install a bolt with lock nut. Maybe even paint it black so a would be thief would...
Just throwing out an idea, what about a lock nut and bolt with an unusual hex style head? Thieves would need a specific bit to unbolt it and it might be a little harder to break off. Not sure if you could find one thick enough but might be worth a trip to Fastenal.
Another idea, upgrade the...
Do you have a build thread for your trailer? I did not see one under your profile. It looks very much like the style and size that I would like to build.
Thank you!
Great job, thanks for sharing. This is the build closest to what I would like to do, (including dimensions). That is why I asked how much it weighs because ideally I would like something I can pull by hand to move from my side yard to the front driveway. I plan on taking welding classes in...
If I’m insulting your intelligence with my comments, let me know, but it’s probably worth filling the water jugs on the front of the trailer before you weigh it.
Here is a link to what he is referring to:
I read some reviews and besides cost, the biggest down side is that you have to unscrew the slide out drawer to remove it. I would like to eventually build something similar but I would like to be able to remove the drawer easily so the trailer can...
That makes sense. I was perusing some of the ready made overland trailers on the "buyers guide" and the ones that look similar to yours are in the $6K plus range not including the tent.
It looks great!
Did you weigh it yet? It seems like most of the mass is already on there.
Edit: One more question, why do you hope to break even in cost compared to buying a ready made trailer? Shouldn't you save a lot of money if you don't count the time you spend?
Aloha!
I am reading posts on Wranglers and 4runners as I'm shopping SUV's that my wife can drive and I can enjoy. Not much "overland" here in Hawaii, but there are a few cool spots and a lot of the paved roads here are so bad you almost need a truck to avoid damage.
