What is the best piece of advice you can give a new overlander?

The number one thing I have learned is gear is nice but not needed. Some times just getting out is the hardest part.

    Overlanding with bears?

I grew up in bear country. Also have experience hiking in bear country. First thing is don't cook or eat where you sleep. If you know you are going to be in bear country make sure to invest in bear proof containers. I would start here Bear Resistant Products - Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee...

    Continued Engine Issues. Help!

I am assuming you have the 4.0 inline 6 that Jeep put in most of their vehicles. I would start by checking all of you spark plug wires. (Check for rubbing, burnt sections, or even crimped and cuts.) From there replace the coil packs if you haven't. If this hasn't solved the issue I would start...

    Primitive camping

It depends greatly on location. To expand on what K12 said. If you are out west BLM or National forest even to an extent as a lot of open camping. For Forest Service call the local ranger station for info. It'll be a lot more direct but you can often times learn of closures ahead of time and...

    Spare Tire

From experience I would recommend moving it from underneath to the bed. As for size you will want a full size spare. The reasons for not wanting it under the truck is it can be punctured there much easer than in other locations (I have had this happen multiple times in company vehicles). As for...

    Recommended radio?

I currently have a 2006 jeep lj that I am wanting to add communication gear too. However unsure what is widely used. I have a CB but have heard they aren't used as much anymore? What have your experiences been and what would you recommend? And I do a mix of overlanding and mild rock crawling...
