I had some trepidation about solo outings myself. That led me to do as many as I could. Often, I would go out on my own a day or two before meeting up with friends. That meant, if I did get in trouble, help was coming at some point. I've never had any issues. There's a lot to be said for...
Gaia lost me with a severe price hike, lack of new features/polish, and the removal of my most-used map layer. In protest, I gave OnX a try. It's fine, I guess. Neither of them have ever worked like I wanted them to.
Avenza has the map layer I want, but has no web-based interface to build...
I was an a similar boat a few years ago, figuring out my options for maps and whatnot. My setup changed again this year, but I'll explain. Depending on how far you are into the Apple ecosystem, other options may make more sense.
Initially I had an Android tablet because they were cheap and...
Definitely gotta let them dry after the fact, otherwise they will mold if they stay packed away while wet. Regular use in the rain is no problem though.
I dreamed of finding that truck again some day and buying it back. Being able to modify and build it with my adult skill set and budget, it would have been amazing. And I did find it. Sadly, totaled and sold by the insurance company. I don't know how to track it down from there...
I keep coming back to this. I love being called a die hard. :grinning:
And it's true. I've had a 4x4 ever since I started driving, despite living in an area that's at least two hours away from anywhere you might need to shift a t-case. Trips in my early years were made with little more than...
From your video, it looks like things are alive and well. Forum activity must just be a poor metric for it. Vendors are still filling massive spaces indoors and out with all of the latest and greatest, while attracting thousands of visitors who pay to get in, and spend while they're there...
Quality roof rails for the LC80, and AluCab load bars.

Such a combo has been serving me well the last couple years.
When I started with my off-road maps, I had an old DeLorme inReach, which I still use, so I tried the Garmin maps, Gaia GPS, and marked a lot of trails up with Google Maps. I need to test it a bit more, but the last few trips I've had, I never used the inReach at all. Typically I would use it...
I have a regular soldering iron and a small coil of solder that live in the glovebox. Handy for minor electrical/lighting and nylon strap repairs on the trail. I just run mine off the vehicle inverter or the Jackery, but the battery top option is slick!
My encounters have almost exclusively been butterflies and field mice, but once in 2018 I was fueling up in the middle of nowhere and had a local show me his plaster cast of a footprint.
Cost of fuel vs cost of an additional vehicle and what it would take to make it comfortable and reliable, sticking with the truck is your best bet. Also, your MPG assumptions of the vehicles you don't have are very optimistic.
That’s a shame! The Grabber X3s have been great, I just wonder if I bought more tire than I needed going with the MT. Sounds like I made the right choice!
