    Best tablet for navigation?

Bjoern, It has been a few years, how is all that working out for you?

    Which App is best?

I can clearly see by reading your post you haven’t found an Offroad map app that fits you needs. I think the problem might be that you’re from San Jose California. (LOL) just messing with you. I fully agree with you I haven’t found an Offroad App that fits my needs either.

    Which App is best?

I need to put a qualifier on my opinion: I'm personally NOT looking for just an offroading app. I'm looking for something I can plan a complete trip with. Something that lets me nagivate a two day or a two year trip. With PROPER navigation onroad (Gaia and OnX utterly suck, OnX is actually...

...Again, Gaia and OnX might be okay for short and planned outings, I personally find OnX useless and Gaia is at best an addition to a real navigation application, more like a tool to be used at an offroad destination, not to be used while actually traveling long distances to that destination.

George Washington National Forest Dispersed Camp Sites

The interactive map is most useful for planning prior to leaving home. There is a mobile app, but I've found it to be of limited use, best to download the maps to your choice of navigation. Be aware, large areas of these forests do not have cell coverage, especially true in a large radius...

    Which App is best?

For offline navigation, I mainly use oruxmaps as an app. And also OB1. I chose oruxmaps because it is a bit more complex to use as there are many options, but you can get countless maps for it and there are import and export functions for tracks, POIs, etc. The OB1 app comes in handy, has good...

    first timer questions

I have tried to use GAIA becore and just could get into it. I have used google maps and the OB1 map for a while but purchased the garmin overlander about 5 months ago. I like being able to not use the phone as navigation. Its pretty easy to use, the basecamp app is not the best but manageable...

    first timer questions

Talking about Starlink I'm going to assume money is no issue here, but for your trail navigation generally I would advise using Google Maps on satellite view for a "'beginner" as you mention. I've been in the game for a long time and while I have used some high-tech equipment before, I still...

    New Navigation Device iPad?

My experiences pretty much mimic yours. My latest experiment was to recently purchase the Garmin Overlander which has iOverlander integrated in it so it can be used offline. I’m planning an extended trip to Utah and Nevada in a month or so and hopefully I’ll work out any issues. I’m also going...

    Continental Divide #OBCDT23

#OBCDT23 Kent Reynolds I have updated the track for the Continental Divide, my computer would not let me trace a new track due to working memory causing me to lose three tries. Very discouraging. Email me at Kent@OverlandBound.com if you would like the GPX file. It is too large to put on...

Members with information/experience/interest in Pennsylvania State Forests for off pavement travel/dispersed camping

I did see, and such an awesome idea. I did my first two trail rides this past year and had both with a meetup within the state Forest. Fun fact: I noticed the new format for rigs and coffee to coordinates and coffee as I was scouting a place for meetups. Most of the people in CPAO are from...

    New Navigation Device iPad?

I know this thread is a bit older, but since I'm in the same position (for a year now) and still undecided, I'd at least like to share my experience so far: iPad with Gaia GPS I have a paid subscription to Gaia and therefore have access to some very nice map layers. The main problem I have...

    King of the Hammers

While alone in the desert a few months ago I began thinking about King of the Hammers and how over the past decade I have always wanted to attend. Although I was aware that the event was held in Johnson Valley, California, I was not sure what time of the year, so I promised myself to check as...

EU Mid Europe Mid Europe Spring Meetup 2024 from April 26th to April 28th, 2024

It won't be long now. I'm delighted that we've found another volunteer for workshops. This year we will deal with (1) Stopping life-threatening bleeding with @XC70_OVERLANDER and @El-Dracho , (2) Making fire - techniques and rules of conduct with @Moritz Jung and @Oligetorix and (3) Outdoor...

    Linking maps

I don't know about a direct link, but you can add locations to the map in the app privately. That way only you can see your special locations etc. and it will keep them saved for you. One thing the app can do is the reverse, you can click a point in the app and send the navigation directions to...

    Stocking stuffers for Overlanders

Great list - B&H is my favorite toy store! I’d also add warm gloves and wool socks (Darn Tough are a favorite); a Yeti or similar insulated drinking cup or coffee cup; a first aid kit; a Thermacell bug repellent kit (used my a LOT this summer); or a subscription to a useful app - such as weather...
