Guest, UPDATE We went through the site migration runbook and completed all steps. We will need to complete the migration next week, but will leave the forums up for the weekend. A few days after maintenance, a major upgrade revision to the forum site will occur.
My two cents are this. New Mexico is a beautiful state however not every inch of it equally binge worthy (the first part of the route is pretty barren). So there will be sections where you would want to go slow and other sections where you might speed up. I think 5 full days would do it, maybe 6...
Sure, that's a factor too for gas mileage. When I did the Colorado BDR and the Wyoming BDR I was with a group and we went about 30-35 a lot of the time. I found that a little fast. When I did the NM BDR I was leading and kept it closer to 20 as I was constantly looking around, taking pics, and...
I've found it's more a case of how many miles are done in 4wd low and not so much as "on the trail". Definitely suck a lot of gas when doing 4wd low. Airing down also hurts gas mileage. Fortunately, New Mexico's sections of the CDT are fairly easy, I did most of the BDR in 2wd or at most, 4wd...
Yeah, saw your posts, looks like you guys had fun. Hopefully I'll get a couple weeks off again some time and can come west and join you guys on another trip, I did really enjoy Gold Butte. I'll bring more gas next time, haha.
Wish I could have joined you for another trip, but this was a little too far west for me this go around. Hope to make another one of your trips (assuming you keep it up) one of these days.
It's currently out, can always come back but thankfully there was a lot of bi-partisan opposition.

Yeah, unfortunately any time you head out west these days you have to include checking recent fire reports and if a trail has washed out after a recent fire.
I did the NMBDR the last week of August 2024, of course it crisscrosses the CDT several times, and I've spent time in NM on some of the other areas too, so looking forward to this.
I've put it on my calendar but right now I don't think I'll be able to make it. I have something Friday that will probably run late so will want to sleep in Saturday but if things change I'll be there.
I saw a YT video about it and a couple of news stories about it, but to me, it's vaporware until they are rolling down the street. How do they drive? How do the plastic panels do when it's 100F degrees out? How about when it's 0F degrees? How much will it cost when you add in some basics like...
Probably not. Check the MVUM maps (free online) for any given National Forest to know where you can camp, but usually if you see an big open space like that it's been logged and is either private land or currently being leased to someone like Weyerhaeuser. I could be wrong, but check the MVUM...
