If you want to go 'overland camping' to get a feel for things, places like Big Bear, Idyllwild, Thomas Mountain, and Anza-Borrego are great places. If you want more of an 'overlanding experience' for a longer trip, consider doing the Mojave Road or one of the many routes in (and around) Death...
I used to go to Waterest campground in Woodstock all the time when I lived on the East coast. Small, but a really lovely place.
It's got none of the crazy stuff - just nice sites, a pond, and a little river. Great place for a basecamp.

Coyote Flats will almost certainly be fully inaccessible - probably won't open up until ~June.
You might encounter snow at the Buttermilks, but most of that should be open and there's a lot of really nice camping once you're a little in - I'd vote for that. You could also consider Alabama Hills...
+1 for the Oscar's Mobile Hideout Bag. Spendy, but it's indestructible and I like that you can fully open it up from the front - lots of space too. I run it without a tire, so don't know if it's better or worse than other bags to attach to a tire.
Yeti = don't bother - it's overpriced.
I have had two Jackery devices and they're fine. I recently switched to EcoFlow and overall I'm more happy with them - much MUCH faster charging and a better form factor IMO. Larger (surge) output too. Having the 110V sockets on the other side of the...
I'm curious what others think, but that definitely sounds like a "no" to me in a Compass - even if it's the Trailhawk trim. Some much good stuff to wheel in DV, so I'd focus on easier stuff to start out with - Steel pass is much too stout for a 'first experience' IMO (unless you were driving a...
The EcoFlow delta can take >1,000W input so it can charge very very fast - IF you can output that much e.g., via an inverter. It's solar input can do 400W input, so you can also do a 400W 12V to 48V regulator.
I believe all their products are some of the fastest to charge.
I recently did a drawer system for my WK2 and kept everything to 3/4 plywood + Bully Liner for paint/texture. All of this is sitting on 3/4 plywood as well and I haven't had any issues. I made the drawer build itself lighter by cutting out significant proportions from the sides, top, internal...

OE West is in Flagstaff, right? Assuming you're taking I-8 > I-17, you could consider camping out near Crown King instead. Lots of camping on the first part of the road (59) up there (e.g., around Bumble Bee) and then again up near Crown King itself (if you want/need to go higher to escape the...
We have a week-long trip planned for next week (8/23 > 8/28) and were planning on heading to Monache Meadows. However, given recent fires and the heat, it seems like that is likely a no-go - especially with the recent Walker's fire.
We're heading out of San Diego - since the Eastern Sierra...
