Years ago i saw a first gen Montero on the trails in Tellico, NC with 34x9.5 Super Swampers on stock wheels and no lift if i remember right. That thing wheeled great and looked bad ass. I considered getting one but didn't have the cash at the time.

If you're having drivability issues then you definitely need to get it fixed ASAP. There are a brazillion lift kits out there so finding the right one is going to take some time. I have an AEV 3.5 kit and I'm happy with it and it drives much better than stock. With your goal of overlanding...
We were in Big Bear a couple of weeks ago and my wife did her usual "I'm feeling carsick" routine as soon as the tires touched dirt. Then as soon as she was behind the wheel it was Baja 1000 time through every mud puddle on the trail.
