In UK there are various "bands" which could be used for radio,

CB - Citizens Band, is a common one amongst drivers of any vehicle (2x2, 4x4, 6x6 ect)

PMR - Professional mobile radio (or known as Personal Mobile Radio), is the next common one for those who have handhelds between each user, this is in the UHF 446 band

Amateur Radio - This requires you to have a "Ham" licence where by you have attended an RSGB course which upon passing you can apply for your Licence
In the UK there are 3 Tiers to the Amateur Radio Licence
Foundation Licence - M3 / M6 callsigns
Intermediate Licence - 2E0 / 2E1 callsigns
Full Licence - G / M call signs

Each level of amateur licence has certain restrictions to Bands and Power limits which can be used

Visitors to the UK may apply to have a reciprocal licence under the CEPT conditions - and vice versa for Full licence holders when going abroad - but you would need to check the Host Countries rules first
