I loaded up the wife and kids and travel from San Antonio TX to the Denver area and then to Chinns Lake in Colorado. It was quiet the adventure... and not what we expected. Here's part 1 of 3:
Nice videos. I can totally relate to spending the entire first day just driving "through" Texas. And yes, we have spent the night in motels along the way to save the camping for the destination.
Yeah, when you only have limited time off of work, it's best to stop at hotels quickly and get to the destination. Plus, TX doesnt have much to offer with dispersed camping anyways. Otherwise, I'd camp more around the area. Anyways, thanks for watching Roots66!
When you have little ones on the trip with you, sometimes you have to take the path of peace. One must consider the comfort of his little weary travelers while still continuing to provide a fun adventure... Part 3

We loved our trip to the Great Sand Dunes, except for the skeeters. We ended up camping at the site just outside the park. Bugs weren't too bad there. Took the Medano Pass from the other way. Got all the way to the back entrance of the park and found the gate locked due to a washed out road. Had to turn around and make the 9 hour drive around the mountain to get to the park.

9 hour drive?! That's quiet a distance off course to get there! But I guess the journey is part of the adventure. As for the road being washed out for you, it was blocked going up through the Medano Pass the other direction on our trip too. We had to turn around, so it limited the sites that where available. Although, there weren't many people camping along the creek anyways. In the end the mosquitos were too much to deal with (even with long sleeves and head nets). Side note to anyone going out there to camp: consider the fact that mid June through July is mosquito season in the outer dunes area.
